#174: Pursue Holiness

Image
Pursue holiness, without which, no one will see the LORD. Hebrews 12:14 Dear brothers and sisters, I found it necessary to write a follow-up to a previous post on this blog ( gutsy guilt ) because like I mentioned in that particular post, in scriptures, God is portrayed as eternally just in punishing all evil, but at the same time, He is eternally loving and ready to always forgive and be merciful to us when we err. These two extremes of what I call the God spectrum can be found everywhere in the bible, for example in Exodus 34, when God was introducing himself to Moses, this is what He said: And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and fourth generation." Exodus 34...

#173: Gratitude

Image
Psalm 100 Amplified Bible (AMP) Shout joyfully to the  Lord , all the earth. 2  Serve the  Lord  with gladness and delight; Come before His presence with joyful singing. 3  Know and fully recognize with gratitude that the  Lord  Himself is God; It is He who has made us,  [ a ] not we ourselves [and we are His]. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4  Enter His gates with a song of thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, bless and praise His name. 5  For the  Lord  is good; His mercy and lovingkindness are everlasting, His faithfulness [endures] to all generations. ·          Thank and praise God for everything in your life.  Thank Him for even the difficulties. It is a sacrifice to do this. But He can turn troubles to triumph. "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offe...

#172: Contending for the Faith in Today's Culture

Image
Beloved...I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 3 Calvary greetings beloved. If there is a theme for believers in this generation it will be the importance of maintaining our salvation status to ensure that in the end, we make it to heaven. And if there is any book in the bible that talks elaborately about this topic, it is Jude. His epistle is a 1 chapter epistle. But as it was relevant to the believers that he was writing to through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it is more relevant to us living today. I invite you to take the time to read the book by yourself. This is just a summary of the epistle. We will just take a brief study on the book of Jude today. May God grant us insight as we dive in. From vs 3 , which is our anchor text, Jude makes it clear the reason for this epistle. He initially wanted to write about the glory of our salvation - this should have been a happy text, but he f...

#171: God's Unlikely Choice

Image
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:1 We can all agree that God is the greatest force in all of creation. He is matchless. Throughout history, God has consistently put His glory on display for all to see. It is His great pleasure to be glorified. He is a jealous God and does not share His glory with any man ( Isaiah 42:8 ). However, as mighty as He is, the astonishing thing is His choice on how He wants His majesty displayed. Today, we will take a brief study on Psalm 8 and extrapolate a bit on other instances to show His consistency in making unlikely choices. May God grant us insight in Jesus' name. Amen. First of all, let us explore just how majestic God is: You have set Your glory above the heavens. ( vs 1 ) When I look at your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars which You have set in place. ( vs 3 ) Like we have established earlier, God's glory is on display for all to see. Since the creation of the world, His invi...

#170: I have sinned again (gutsy guilt)

Image
"But God has already saved me, why am I still struggling?" "I am probably a candidate for hell". "There is definitely no way God is going to put up with my sinful behaviour". "I have sinned beyond forgiveness". "I keep backsliding, so I better do myself and God a favour by just continuing in sin." "God is punishing me for my sins, I cannot be saved" "I am better off on my own" If you are like me and have backslidden a lot of times, today's study is for you. But if you are the strong and mighty, we will meet on another Sunday. By God's grace today He will be delivering many from a trap that our adversary keeps us in. The more we grow in the knowledge of God, we realise that God's character is a spectrum; laying emphasis on just one aspect of God will give a skewed relationship with Him. One of such dilemmas that plague children of God in their walk with Him is His love and justice. If we focus on just on...

#169: Babel (Man vs God)

Image
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. Genesis 11:1 The narrative of the famous tower of Babel presents us with one of the most beautiful demonstrations of God's sovereignty and providence over the affairs of men. The chapter begins with a piece of very impressive information - the whole earth had a united front. They had formed a conspiracy; they spoke the same words - "come let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly; come let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth." ( vs 3&4 ) One aim and one objective - rebellion against the Most High. One could argue that they were building for themselves a tower and a refuge through the advancement in technology that would save them from God's judgement should He decide to send another flood. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men had built. ( vs ...

#168: Ruth and the Gospel (Part 2)

Image
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me and from the words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the daytime; but thou hearest not, and in the night season, and am not silent. Psalm 22:1&2 Today we continue looking at the book of Ruth, but we focus on Naomi. The book of Ruth opens by telling us that this was in the days of the Judges.  We understand that those were hard times in the history of Israel. And in this particular era, there was a famine that was so severe that it seemed wiser to sojourn to the land of the Midianites - a sworn enemy of Israel to find food than remain in the promised land (meant to be flowing in milk and honey). Just like Naomi and her family, very often we pass through hard times; in such times it is important to ask: is God on holiday? As I meditate on the verses in Psalm 22 , I think of the agony of Jesus on the cross when he yelled on the cross. And just like Jesus and the psalmist, Naomi voiced out her pai...
