#219: MOVIE REVIEW- Breakthrough

Patient Died, Mother Prayed, Patient came back to life- Dr Kent Sutterer

BREAKTHROUGH is a 2019 movie based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. On Jan. 19th, 2015, 14-year-old John Smith and two friends ran out onto a frozen Missouri lake to play. Just teen guys having fun, not realizing the risk they were taking. The iced surface gives way and John and his friends fell through. His friends were able to get out but John when down into the deep for more than 15 minutes. He was rescued and taken to the hospital lifeless and pulseless. When all hope seems lost, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of a dire prognosis. This is a captivating reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.

What’s most fascinating about this movie is that it's based on a true life happening. This shows that miracles still happen in a world where we try to scientifically explain every happening hence holding miracles with a pinch of salt or even mocking miracles. There are a lot of lessons from the movie so I would recommend that you watch this.

FAITH

The circumstances surrounding John’s condition did not shake his mother’s trust in what God can do. It is usually not about what the situation is saying, but what God is capable of doing.  This story aligns with the definition of faith.

“Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].” Hebrews 11:1 AMP.

When it looks like all hope is lost, we should always trust the God that allowed Sarah to conceive even when her body was dead (Heb 11:11); raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:38-44) and healed the woman with the issue of blood. (Luke 8:43-48:).

Secondly, we should always speak positively about circumstances. Joyce never allowed any negative talk about her son’s prognosis. She spoke life into John’s life and he came back to life. No matter what you are going through in life, you should always remember that “You have a purpose and you are loved” and proclaim positivity.

LOVE

Joyce Smith loved her son so much. She exceeded limits to make sure her son was alive. The love was very palpable to think that John was an adopted son. Love is the most powerful force. This can paint a picture of how much God so loved us that He gave his only Son to give us life. We were dead in sin, beyond rescue, but Jesus died and the breath of Life came into us and gave us a second shot at life. As Christians, we should always remember this love and reciprocate it by living lives worthy of God’s approval.

“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Saviour] shall not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

PRAYER

The main lesson here is about intercessory prayer. We should cultivate the attitude of praying for one another. Even in seemingly daunting circumstances, God can intervene. We can pray for missionaries, the growth of the Church, the salvation of souls and our Nation.

“Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (ESV)

SUBMISSION

‘Let Go and Let God’.  We could see Joyce trying to control every outcome in John’s condition. Most times, we are as guilty as she was, so we have to let go and let God take charge, only then can we see His mighty hand at work.

Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am…” Matt 16: 24 (MSG)

FAMILY

Joyce and Brain had some differences about John’s prognosis however, they were both supportive and encouraging to each other. Also, most notably is the support this family got from the community of brethren. There’s strength in number. Just as the Church prayed for Peter in Prison, this community prayed and held a vigil for John. It is essential for us to identify with the community of brethren as they may just be our support and hope in times of need.

So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent and persistent prayer for him was being made to God by the church. Acts 12: 5 (AMP)

..

The past or even your current situation may be gloomy, frightening and discouraging; however, hold on to God for He is about to do a new thing. You are loved and God has a purpose for your life.

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:18-19 (KJV)

“Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose”

Happy Sunday

God bless you.
