#155: The Prayer Altar

When the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem. Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.

Ezra3:1-3

Just as rebuilding the altar and making sacrifices was very important to the Israelites, so it is for us. Think of the altar as a meeting place with God; a special place or time set aside for just you and Him. Prayer is a must if you are to live a victorious life. God is calling people to build prayer altars in their lives. As oxygen is essential for human survival, so is prayer to us as Christian; prayer is our lifeline. Prayer is not a mere formality; it has nothing to do with our cultural backgrounds, age or circumstances. Prayer is our direct channel of communication with God.

The Israelites revived the tradition of the morning and evening sacrifice. The Holy Spirit is reminding us today that the fire must be kept burning on the altar; we must seek God continually and expectantly. Prayer isn’t just something we do as an “extra” in life but rather it is the core of our lives and it shapes us as we encounter God through it.

Our engagement on the prayer altar comes with a lot of benefits. We get to experience power as our level of authority changes when we pray. There is a power at work in us that is directly related to our prayer life. The more we engage in prayers, the more power we generate to provoke changes in our lives.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.
Ephesians 3:20

In addition, in the place of prayer, we get strength to face the challenges that may come our way. When there is a threat, our level of strength, power and grace increases through our prayer altar.

If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.
Proverbs 24:10

People of God, it’s time to seek the Lord. Let’s engage our heart, strengthen our faith, sanctify our hearts and rebuilt our altar of prayer.

“Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.” Isaiah 55:6
