#145: CODE 6:33

 Matthew 6: 25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Our text for today might make us wonder what exactly is Jesus saying? Does this mean that Jesus wants you to pray all day in an open field, with an empty stomach, with no cloths? Does this imply that Jesus wants us to sit still without making any plan about our future? He wasn’t even talking about massive riches and investments but He shuts down the drive to chase ‘man’s basic needs’. These are the basic stuffs that we have been indoctrinated to believe are the most important things that man must chase to survive. Jesus says plainly; they shouldn’t from the essence of your life.

In Matthew 6:33, there is an alternative to worrying about our needs. "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." In other words, we should depend on God for our provisions instead of worrying about how we will obtain them. Know that "all these things" refer to eating, drinking and wearing clothes. When we depend on God, we are assured to have our basic human needs met.

To seek something is to earnestly look for it with the expectation of finding it. It is unfortunate that some people often do not seek God first. They seek everything else before they seek God. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." The word "seek" in Matthew 6:33 is a present imperative verb that means one is to pursue something and keep on pursuing it without stopping. Therefore, let your principal care and study be how to get to heaven, and how to promote the kingdom of God in the world; to bring your hearts into subjection to the will of God, that the kingdom of God may be within you, and how to bring others to the obedience of faith and of the will of God. And for the things of this life, it shall fare with you as it did with Solomon, 1 Kings 3:12, who asked not riches and honour, but had them. You shall have all your necessities, Psalm 37:4Mark 10:30.

Putting God’s Kingdom first is the most beautiful thing anyone can ever do. The rest, peace and love that the world cannot give will be your reality. You live your life from a place of rest, Christ becomes your confidence and your strength. You do not do things to prove a point to the world but whatever the Lord grants you grace to do will be for His glory and not for your recognition. Even when things come and go, they don’t move you because they don’t define your life.
